Awareness

Enlighten’s goals for raising awareness about human trafficking are to spread a message of compassion and understanding, and to educate as many people as possible about recognizing the signs of human trafficking and how to help a victim. This help can be as simple as reporting a tip to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Most of our awareness accomplishments are through hosting events and distributing educational materials.

Some of our most successful awareness campaigns so far are listed below.

  • Through our partnership with The S.O.A.P. Project, we have hosted events where students who stop at a table we set up can label a bar of hotel soap with the National Human Trafficking Hotline Number and learn about human trafficking. These labeled bars of soap are then donated by Enlighten members to local at-risk motels in the Columbus area. These soap bars placed in motels can then be used by trafficking victims to get the help they need.
  • We give away promotional and educational materials including buttons and business cards to students to raise awareness about our organization and human trafficking.
  • We host speakers and movie nights where attendees can learn about the horrors of modern-day slavery.

Although many organizations work to raise awareness about this issue, Enlighten hopes to contribute to this movement and make a difference in Columbus by targeting younger populations, who are considered difficult to access by most existing groups.
